Wakarusa Festival

Wakarusa to feature My Morning Jacket

June 2-5

Mulberry Mountain

Ozark, Ark.

The winding roads that lead to Mulberry Mountain transports attendees to a secluded, enticing, music-filled weekend kingdom. An air lingers about which reverts the mindset back to childhood shenanigans and fun.

The festival grounds are complete with carnival rides, including a seven-story ferris wheel, disc golf course, and fishing ponds (license required). At 6:30 on Friday evening the costume contest parade commences. Participants get dressed in their weekend best, or weirdest, and compete for big prizes.

But the real attraction to this year’s Wakarusa is no doubt the addition of My Morning Jacket to the lineup. Waka’s had big bands before, but the Jacket is currently getting set to release a new album, and is at the top of their game — as is the festival and the rest of the lineup, which has a wealth of other heavy hitters, including Ben Harper, Thievery Corporation, Umphrey’s McGee, and Mumford and Sons, to name only a few.

The festival is now in its seventh year, and this will mark the third year that it’s been hosted in the Ozarks (as opposed to Kansas, where it began).

You’re going there to see: My Morning Jacket, STS9, Mumford & Sons.

You’re going to come home talking about: These United States, the psych/folk pop rockers, who have gained lots of attention elsewhere in the country and deserve it ‘round these parts.

Total Est. Time: 14 hours, 28 minutes

Total Est. Distance: 920 miles

YOU NEED TO KNOW: Wakarusa takes place in the enchanting forests surrounding Mulberry Mountain.  Despite this, Arkansas is in the South, so prepare for some down-home humidity. Bring personal fans, water spritzers, and sacrifice your beauty sleep to get ice early each morning. Most festival-goers take a short hike to hide out from the afternoon heat at the waterfall. The trek is an endeavour, but some brews by the cool water replenish your mind and body for the after-dark pandemonium.

Camping: Both on-site and off-site camping is available, but main venue camping is exceptionally better.
