4 out of 5 stars

Patrick Dethlefs’’ sublime new 7” While You’re Carrying The Weight shows maturity and grace in songwriting usually observed in career musicians more than twice his age.

The 20-year-old Kittredge, Colo.-based songwriter, who last year released the highly praised full-length Fall & Rise, has returned with this sparse, yet gorgeous, two-track 7” vinyl release, which also includes a digital bonus track. Dethlefs is joined by producer Patrick Meese, who adds keys, percussion, bass and mandolin. Guitarist Jeremy Averitt ads electric guitar on the track “Help Me See” and Susan and Sarah Anderson lend vocal accompaniment on that song as well as the title track, where violinist Justin Hoffenberg also joins.

Dethlefs has a knack for composing songs that are as rich as a Bon Iver melody, but which don’t require multiple layers to shine. It’s soft, it’s soothing and it’s beautiful.
