The Whale Tales
3 out of 5 stars
With a swampy blues flavor, a bit of a country swagger and a blend that equally combines elements of J.J. Cale and Dire Straits’ Mark Knopfler, Boulder’s The Whale Tales throw down a gritty slab of Americana on their new EP Methods. A hefty chunk of the disc, particularly songs like “I Don’t Know” and the title track “Methods” sound like they would fit well blasting from a Peterbilt cab on a hot, sunny highway in the 1970s. But the recording isn’t entirely retro either. The Whale Tales also throw in enough contemporary playing and songwriting so as not to be a nostalgic novelty.
