Holy friggin’ harmonies! It’s almost distracting how good the vocals are on the Ginny Mules debut release. The musicianship is solid but the band could perfectly play their instruments upside down and backwards and their vocals would still sit front and center on this eight-song LP. The Ginny Mules are 4/5ths women, but claim they are “definitely not a girl band.” However, all that female power allows them to absolutely drape their modern bluegrass songs in layers upon layers of harmonies, and the result is an album that seems spit-shined and polished, while maintaining a casual nonchalance and that keeps even the most traditional-sounding arrangements light and fresh.
