The Ridgelings
Hard Winter Rations
Independent
3.5 out of 5 stars
The Ridgelings say that their new album Hard Winter Rations is like a soundtrack to being snowed in. It’s a perfect analogy for an album that is lush in its sparseness, cheery and melancholy, precise and raw.
From the opening notes of “Et Tu,” it seems that The Ridgelings have placed the listener right in their living room in the midst of a power outage, leaving acoustic instruments and copious amounts of harmonies as the only form of entertainment. That living room feel is the essential element. These exact same tracks in a note-perfect studio setting wouldn’t have half of their exquisite depth.
